Yesterday, I ended up spending the night at the police station for the most stupid reason ever, leaving me completely sleep-deprived and vexed. But that wasn’t enough to ruin my Sunday plans.

Holargos was playing another derby, this time away at Doxa Vironos, and I wasn’t going to miss it. Not only are the two teams close in the standings, but they also have some of the best fans in the league, making this encounter particularly interesting. Doxa is a well-supported team from the area of Vironas and shares the stadium with Athinaikos, who I visited two months ago. It was their chance to minimise the gap in the table with leaders Holargos.

Today is also a special day in Greece. On 17th November, Greeks celebrate the anniversary of the student uprising that led to the end of the military dictatorship in 1974. Both sets of fans chanted together in honour of this and hung banners.

The atmosphere was overall very friendly, and the stands were almost full. The ultras from either side gave their all, but the match on the pitch wasn’t quite a derby in the end, as Holargos fully dominated the game and scored four goals.
