Korydallos Municipal Stadium

It had just started getting dark as we headed back to Korydallos, the starting point of our outing, for the last game of the day. The stadium of Korydallos is a very typical Greek municipal ground, with one concrete stand and a track. It’s not the most exciting venue, but the fact that it’s literally next to the most notorious prison in the country makes it somewhat special. At least, that’s what I was trying to tell myself while freezing in the half-empty stand.
Korydallos Prison Complex is the country's largest and most famous jail. What I always found unique about it is that it’s a prison located well within the city limits, in a residential area. This is because, back in the '60s, when it was built, Korydallos was a rural area, but the whole city has transformed since. Now, you can see the prison walls if you turn around from the top of the stadium’s stand.
Ermis Korydallou and Aias Salaminas are both historical clubs. The former was born in Korydallos, and the latter in the island of Salamis. But today, it’s their reserve teams facing each other. C EPS, the third division of a regional league, is the absolute lowest level of the Greek football league system (sixth tier). In the Piraeus league, C EPS is split into two groups, with Group B designated specifically for reserve teams (B teams).
Both teams seemed to be composed of young players, and the match didn’t feel competitive at all. It felt like we were watching U19s at training. It was arguably the least interesting game of the three we went to today, but I was still happy to be watching football in a new ground. In the second half, Aias scored, but by that time, we were too hungry and tired to care.
